Barça are confident of renewing Pedri before the assembly

BarcelonaBarça and Pedri are completing the renewal of the Canarian midfielder, whose contract expires in 2022. After making his debut last season, the footballer has become one of the most prominent players in the Barça squad. The talks began a few weeks ago and are well under way, pending only the duration of the contract. The intention of Joan Laporta’s board of directors is to be able to close the agreement this week and announce the renewal before Sunday, the day of the assembly of delegates.

Pedri’s is considered a “strategic renovation”, as is Ansu Fati’s. Both players are negotiating with the club, but at the moment the one that is best on track is Pedri. The salary has already been agreed – it will be in the middle of the salary scale of the workforce – but it remains to be seen how long the agreement will be extended: either a long contract, until 2025 or 2026, or one of short and reviewable after two seasons. In the case of Ansu, the issue is greener, although there is optimism in the Camp Nou offices and they are in a hurry to “avoid a new Ilaix case”. That is, a situation in which the player raises a pulse with the club to force his departure or get a salary improvement above what the entity expects.

For the new board, which balances to square the budget, announcing Pedri would be a blow to win the favor of the delegates before a key meeting in which it will be necessary to approve last season’s accounts – with 481 million losses–, a statutory amendment to eliminate –among others– the debt limit and request permission from the entity to negotiate with an investment fund worth 1.5 billion, the cost of Espai Barça.
