Orlando (dpa) – The basketball professionals Moritz and Franz Wagner say they don’t know envy among brothers. “Of course I’m really happy when Moritz scores 50 points. And I think he’s just as happy the other way round,” said 20-year-old Franz on Monday. Moritz, who was four years older than him, assured an online media panel: “It’s a natural instinct that you bleed for your brother.” There are only positive feelings “when you see your brother successfully”.
The two Berliners are facing their first season together in the North American professional league NBA at Orlando Magic. Moritz Wagner has been in the best league in the world for three years and has played for the Los Angeles Lakers, the Washington Wizards and briefly for the Boston Celtics. Franz Wagner was drafted eighth by Orlando Magic this summer. In the first game of the season, the brothers and the Florida team will play at the San Antonio Spurs on Thursday (2.30 a.m.).
The two Germans live together in Orlando and spend a lot of time together. “The pre-season was great fun together,” said Moritz Wagner, full of anticipation, about the season. “Daily life is also great fun.” It is the first time that they can play together in a team, added Franz Wagner. “We both have a lot of fun hanging out off the court. That wasn’t possible for the past few years.”
The Wagner duo has not yet realized that their teammates treat them differently because they are brothers. “There is no one who overcompensates or exaggerates because we are brothers,” said Moritz Wagner. “If you didn’t know and saw the names on the jerseys, you wouldn’t necessarily notice it that way – except that we sometimes come to work in the same car.”
