It’s not even been two weeks since Battlefield 2042 released, and Electronic Arts’ latest FPS has been in shambles since launch. We can imagine that the reactions of the players must greatly displease the American publisher, because even if he intends, in the company of the DICE teams, to retype his game properly, it is the whole of his strategy around the license which it aims to restructure.
Decidedly, this end of the year 2021 will have seen some damn agitated launches! After Call of Duty : Vanguard and Grand Theft Auto : The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, it’s the turn of Battlefield 2042 to wipe the plasters. Between the bugs to fix, the requirements of the players to be met and the many balances, Electronic Arts and DICE Studios have a lot to do. However, it would seem that the general direction taken by the license does not suit the group which wants to refine its formula and unleash the full potential of the franchise. To this end, the American publisher has announced a wave of major changes, both in the way of building the next installments of the license and the future content of the games in place, as well as in the organization chart of the companies!
DICE, a real battlefield!
Electronic Arts has therefore decided to make a series of internal changes to implement the future of the Battlefield license. A future that will be written without the current CEO of DICE, namely Oskar Gabrielson, who is leaving the company at the very end of the year to devote himself to a new project outside of those the publisher is currently working on. It is the former director of the Ubisoft Annecy studio, Rebecka Coutaz, who will replace him at the start of 2022.
Vince Zampella, one of the founders of Respawn Entertainment (Titanfall, Apex Legends, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order,…) becomes the new head of the Battlefield franchise while retaining his current responsibilities within the group. To restore the image of the license, it provides significant growth in the number of developers on the franchise which is, according to him, ” rich in opportunities, both in terms of storytelling and the universe in which their teams can create innovative game experiences. »
For his part, Marcus Lehto, recruited at the beginning of the year by Electronic Arts, will be setting up a new team on the Seattle side to work on an important aspect for the future of the license. As for Ripple Effect, the studio behind Portal Mode Battlefield 2042, the objective will be to develop an unprecedented Battlefield experience in the universe of Battlefield 2042.
Explore all the possibilities for Battlefield
Far from wanting to abandon the franchise after this very complicated launch, the CEO of Electronic Arts, Andrew Wilson, is currently putting in place a “long term plan” to support the future of the license and, of course, Battlefield 2042. Many, if not all, possibilities are explored to allow Battlefield to reach its maximum potential.
At the moment, several guidelines are emerging around the franchise. First, Marcus Lehto and his new studio will work closely with DICE and Ripple Effect to improve and develop Battlefield 2042. Further on, the three actors will work hand in hand to extend the license’s narrative possibilities, both in terms of storytelling and character development.
This new direction aims, of course, Battlefield 2042 but also the next opus of the franchise: it is, according to them, to work at a ” variety of experiences “And lay the foundations” storytelling possibilities for today and tomorrow ».
