Be careful if you go to the Coast this weekend, the warning from the authorities: “We are on alert!”

High tides are expected, combined with strong winds. “A combination of factors which, together with the crowd, is dangerous”, indicates An Beun, secretary of the intermunicipal coastal rescue service of West Flanders (IKWV)

If a heat wave is announced, temperatures by the sea will remain below 30 degrees. Many people are therefore expected to seek refreshment there.

“We are on alert. Not only because of the good weather and the crowds, but also because of the combination with the high tides this weekend,” explains Beun.

“At high tides, the water rises very quickly, and this at the busiest time of the day. There is also a strong wind at sea and all these factors make it even more dangerous. The sea is really treacherous at this time. »

The Coastal Rescue Service calls on you again to follow the instructions of the lifeguards and to swim only in supervised areas. “I understand that people want to look for quieter places in this crowd, but then you sometimes end up in unsupervised areas. If you plan to go swimming, please swim in a supervised area. »

In addition, lifeguards also advise bathers to settle on dry sand. “At high tide, there is much less space left on the beach. If you don’t sit on dry sand, you might be surprised by the rapid rise of water. »
