Be careful when shopping: this is how scammers now want your credit card information

Consumers should beware of a new scam. Criminals want to steal their victims’ credit card information. This is how they go about hunting for sensitive data.

Since the corona pandemic, contactless payment has become increasingly popular. It has become much more difficult for fraudsters to get credit card information. As the security experts from Kaspersky reportsbut now there is new malware that is supposed to be stealing more data again.

This concerns versions 06.03.8070, 06.03.8072 and 06.03.8080 of the Prilex PoS malware. This software infects payment terminals. The data from credit cards that are inserted into the device, as well as entered PINs, are recorded by it and end up in the hands of criminals.

However, contactless payment circumvents this scam. The malware was therefore adapted. A new feature now blocks contactless payments. Buyers are thus forced to insert their card into the device, giving the criminals access to the data.

Consumers have few options to defend themselves against this approach. It is usually not possible to tell from the outside whether a device is actually infected. The most important thing is that you take a regular look at your transactions. If you notice any irregularities here, contact your bank immediately.
