New Mexico police and federal agencies are investigating the killings, the latest of which occurred on Friday night.

Police said three other men killed in the state’s largest city over the past nine months appeared to have been targeted because of their religion and ethnicity.

Two of those killed were praying at the same mosque, and were shot dead in Albuquerque in late July and early August. The police said that there "strong probability" that their deaths are linked to the killing of an Afghan immigrant in November.

Among the agencies assisting in the investigation are the New Mexico State Police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the US Judicial Police.

New Mexico Governor Michelle Logan Grisham said on Twitter late Saturday night: "The killing of Muslims living in Albuquerque sparks outrage and is totally unacceptable".
