The Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire on Wednesday asked the actors of the distribution to “shift” the promotional operation coming from across the Atlantic “Black Friday”, scheduled for November 27, while the government must decide in the next days on which the so-called “non-essential” businesses can reopen.
“Is next Friday the right date to organize a Black Friday?” My answer is no “, affirmed the minister during the session of questions to the government in the Senate, asking the actors of the mass distribution and the online trade to” examine all the possibilities of postponing this operation which has no meaning in the present circumstances ”.
Legally, the government can do nothing
“I will have the opportunity to talk to them about it” and “ask them to show a sense of responsibility” in this period of epidemic and crisis, he insisted.
Unlike the dates of the sales, however, the government does not have control over the holding of private initiative promotional operations such as “Black Friday”.
United for the occasion, small traders as well as large distribution players fear seeing purchases shifting online, to digital giants already accused of unfair competition. At the beginning of November, the National Council of shopping centers had demanded “the immediate ban of Black Friday planned with a lot of media hype in full confinement”.
The government is due to announce in the coming days the modalities of a gradual loosening of containment from December 1, but many elected officials and professional organizations are asking that small so-called “non-essential” businesses can reopen on November 27.
The latter are worried about being penalized in relation to businesses that have remained open and online sales sites when “Black Friday” begins, while this second confinement endangers the survival of many of them.
“With the Prime Minister, with the President of the Republic, we are doing our utmost to ensure that this reopening can take place […] as soon as sanitary conditions permit, ”assured Bruno Le Maire.
