Blackmagic Design Case Study: SEKAI NO OWARI “Habit” MV – PRONEWS : Digital Video Production Web Magazine

According to Blackmagic Design, DaVinci Resolve Studio and DaVinci Resolve Mini Panel were used to grade the music video for SEKAI NO OWARI’s blockbuster “Habit,” which has surpassed 1.5 billion in-app plays on TikTok. The video, which has already been viewed over 88 million times four months after its release on the official YouTube channel, was also shot using the Blackmagic Video Assist 7′ 12G HDR.

“Habit” is a message song that speaks to young people who tend to categorize themselves and feel relieved to be in that frame, to throw away such bad habits (Habit) and live in their own way. In the music video, band members dressed as teachers dance with dancers who play the role of students in a school in a unique and addictive dance to the song. It’s buzzing.

The music video was shot by director of photography Koretaka Kamiike and graded by Hajime Kato of Eyes Eye Inc. using DaVinci Resolve Studio and the DaVinci Resolve Mini Panel.

Mr. Kato:I originally worked as a director and editor, and I met Koretaka as a director and cameraman. After that, I helped Mr. Koretaka with the grading of a music video that he shot, which led me to do dozens of grading jobs.

Mr. Kamiike:Kato-san’s studio is like a place where we spend a lot of time working together to create a look. Since we started working together, we’ve been doing experimental things little by little, and they immediately understand what I want to do. It’s nice to be able to

For this shoot, Kamiike used a Blackmagic Video Assist 7′ 12G HDR.

Mr. Kamiike:The Video Assist is compact and light, so I always bring it with me on site. The playback response is fast and intuitive, so it’s easy to ask assistants and production staff to operate it. There are many recording codecs, and the fact that you can record with an SD card is also helpful.

Regarding the look of this music video, Mr. Kato commented as follows.

Mr. Kato:In fact, the direction of the look changed drastically with the addition of the director from the look that Koretaka-san and I made together at the beginning. At first, I added grain to make it look like a film, but in the end I gave it a more modern feel by giving it a digital look without adding grain.

In order to express the hidden and positive characters that appear in the lyrics, I divided the grading according to the scene, and adjusted it so that the details were kept so that the black was not too crushed even though it was dark in the scene of the hidden character.

In addition, I put a little blue on the whole from the midtone to the highlight, but I changed the proportion depending on the cut. DaVinci Resolve Studio is helpful because I can change the percentage of color applied to each node. You also use Magic Mask a lot. This time I also used it to adjust the color of the wall and the color of the person in the one-shot part of the band members.

Mr. Kamiike:The classroom scene was an environmentally difficult shoot. I couldn’t hang the lighting from the top because the lighting equipment would be reflected on the screen. It would be nice if I could always shoot in the best possible environment, but the vast majority of times that is not the case. At times like that, I borrow the power of DaVinci and shoot while thinking that if it’s here, I can cut the mask with color correction.

The work has been released to the public, and the synergistic effect of music and dance has become very popular mainly on SNS, and a collaboration video with popular YouTuber HIKAKIN has been produced. The collaboration video, which was produced just like the original version, was also graded by Mr. Kato.

Mr. Kato:The HIKAKIN version had different cameras, lighting, and locations, so it was actually difficult to match the colors with the original, but I managed to get it to look like the original using DaVinci Resolve.

The duo commented on DaVinci Resolve as follows.

Mr. Kamiike:DaVinci Resolve is a tool that helps us when we are in trouble, but more than that, it is also a presence that pushes us to create better things because it always incorporates new things.

Mr. Kato:DaVinci Resolve makes my work more refined. I’ve used other software, but DaVinci Resolve is the one that allows me to play with the colors the way I want them.
