‘Boo’ is a horror entertainer released by Rakul Preet Singh directed by AL Vijay. The film, which started streaming on OTT yesterday, is also Vijay’s second film after ‘Diya’. The film has been released in Telugu, Tamil and Hindi languages. The story starts with Kiara (Rakul Preet Singh) planning to celebrate Halloween with her three friends Kavya, Aruna and Ritu and invites them to her house.

Halloween is the day of the spirits. It is believed that on this day the spirits of the dead will come to visit the house. This time Kiara decides to participate in the annual festival called ‘Halloween’ or ‘All Hallow’s Eve’. Preparations for the festivities included dressing up as devils and hanging Halloween figures and skeletons in front of the house. Although not interested, her friends come to the celebration for her. This time Kiara shows them a rare book called ‘Halloween Stories’ which contains ghost stories. Even though there is an instruction at the beginning of the book not to stop reading until all the chapters are finished, they don’t care. As they begin reading, they encounter strange and unusual events. What is the secret behind the book?, what did the four friends do to escape from the unusual situation?, what happened in the end…? The film is just a below average viewing experience. The theme is similar to Ram Gopal Varma’s Darna Marna Hai and Darna Saruri Hai. But the movie disappoints in the horror scenes. Boo is the biggest example of how horror movies no longer rely on clichéd scenes and regular horror effects to scare the audience. Similarly, the makers tried to add some twists towards the end of the film, but since the earlier parts of the film were lost in the script and making, these twists felt silly and illogical.

If there were some horror moments to keep the viewers intrigued, the movie would have been a bit more interesting. Rakul who plays the central character has given her performance flawlessly. Vishwak Sen has also done well in his character as a paranormal scientist. Vishwak Sen has done justice to his character with the conviction that screen time is limited but very crucial. Nivetha, Megha Akash, Manjima Mohan and Reba Monica John have graced their respective roles.

GV Prakash’s music was below average. Sandeep K. Although Vijay’s cinematography is impeccable, it is disappointing that the audience loses sight of the eerie and terrifying experience. ‘Boo’ turned out to be a disappointing film due to lack of compelling narrative and bad screenplay as required for a horror film.
