The Shanghai International Shipping Center has entered a new phase of comprehensive development, characterized by green transformation, digital intelligence and strong resilience, according to participants in the 2022 North Bund Forum.
The forum, held in Shanghai from November 22 to 24, attracted representatives from leading shipping and aviation companies and international organizations, as well as well-known experts to discuss the sustainable development of the international shipping industry.
The port of Shanghai, which has ranked first in container throughput in the world for 12 consecutive years, is undergoing a green transition and progressively becoming a clean, energy-saving and efficient modern hub port.
Statistics show that in the port of Shanghai, the water-to-water throughput rate of containers has reached more than 50 percent, ship-to-ship synchronous LNG bunkering service has started normal operation, and about 97.95 percent of the ships in service with Shore power receiving systems were equipped.

Meanwhile, digitalization is changing the production method, business model, organizational form and operation order of the Shanghai International Shipping Center, and expanding the center’s catchment area.
On September 3 of this year, an empty container transshipment center was put into operation in the Port of Shanghai, which will provide the transportation of empty containers to the Yangtze River Delta region and ports along the Yangtze River by waterway, road and rail made possible, thereby further increasing the capacity of the port of Shanghai as an international shipping hub.
Yu Fulin, director of the Shanghai Municipal Transport Commission, said Shanghai has been working with the Yangtze River Delta to accelerate the construction of a global shipping hub, improve the smooth and resilient shipping collection and distribution system, and improve shipping service and brand influence promote comprehensively in order to improve the resilience of the supply and industrial chain.
In the first three quarters of this year, the port of Shanghai’s container throughput reached 34.89 million TEU, registering positive year-on-year growth and showing strong growth resilience.
