Braves sign Kirby Yates for 2 seasons

ATLANTA – The Atlanta Braves signed right-hander Kirby Yates to three seasons with a guaranteed $ 8.25 million in total on Monday. Yates will earn US $ 1 million next season and US $ 6 million in 2023.

The contract also includes a team option for US $ 5.75 million for 2024. If not exercised, Yates will receive US $ 1.25 million in compensation.

Yates, 34, spent last season with Toronto but did not pitch for the Blue Jays after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow on March 24 of this year. He also had the same operation in 2006.

Yates went to the All-Star Game in 2019, a season in which he led the majors with 41 saves for San Diego. He finished ninth in the NL Cy Young voting that year, posting a 1.19 ERA in 60.2 innings with 101 strikeouts.

Yates made his debut for Tampa Bay in 2014 and has also played for the Yankees and Angels during his seven-year major league career. For life he has 57 saves and a 3.54 ERA.
