“Brussels Waste Sorting: Are Residents Complying with New Obligations?”

2023-05-26 07:07:45

Do the people of Brussels comply with the new waste sorting obligations? Since May 15, the orange bag has become compulsory in the Brussels region. This bag must accommodate food waste. At the same time, the collection days were changed to go, in several neighborhoods, from two weekly collections to one.

At this stage, at Bruxelles Propreté, no definitive figures yet but trends. Example: the tonnage harvested in the orange bags is increasing. But we must be careful: we are talking here about a single sector, that of Bempt in Forest and collections carried out during the day. The first week of entry into force of the obligation, 724 kilos were harvested, per truck. A week later, we went to 1.6 tonnes.

With regard to white bags, an increase is noted. But it cannot be explained by more waste thrown into the bags. But by the fact that if Brussels residents did not integrate the new calendar in the early hours of the reform and that Bruxelles Propreté only collected 20% of the usual tonnage, the latter rose to 80% the following week. Example in Anderlecht where officers collected an average of 1.3 tonnes of white bags per truck before increasing to 5.6 tonnes on Monday May 22.

On the blue bag in the Bempt sector, we go from an average of 817 kilos, per truck, the first Monday to 1,771 tonnes the following Monday“, indicates Bruxelles Propreté.

Conclusion: the inhabitants of Brussels seem to sort their waste more and better and to integrate the new timetables.

161,000 orange containers distributed

Bruxelles Propreté will continue to raise awareness among citizens. Bins and orange bags will also be available in quantity in recyparks and stores.

Nearly 161,000 orange containers have been distributed to households since 2016, including 55,964 since January 2023 alone. The municipalities have played an important role in the distribution of a large part of these containers, as has the agency which, in addition to the distribution, made a large number of Brussels residents aware of the proper use of these bins and the sorting of food waste. Faced with the enthusiasm and strong demand for these containers, Bruxelles-Propreté has ordered additional bins in recent weeks.“Since this Thursday, the municipalities have received around 3,000 containers.
