RB Leipzig was early against 1. FC Köln, but then turned up and later the game. Leipzig is thus on course for the Champions League. For Cologne it was the fifth game in a row without a win.
RB Leipzig won 4-2 (2-1) at 1.FC Köln on Monday evening (01.06.2020). Patrick Schick (20th minute), Christopher Nkunku (38th), Timo Werner (50th) and Dani Olmo (57th) scored the goals for Julian Nagelsmanns Leipziger. Jhon Cordoba (7th) and Anthony Modeste (55th) met for Cologne.
For RB Leipzig it was the fourth win in the fourth game since the resumption of play. Cologne, on the other hand, is still waiting for the first victory after the restart.
“We put in a lot of effort and gave the goals too easily for that. Then of course you end up empty-handed against a good team,” said FC midfielder Jonas Hector, clearly disappointed.
“We are back on the Champions League course. We still have five games, so we want to get at least a two-way cut. Now everyone has to go ‘all in’ and be fully focused,” said Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff.
Rexhbecaj hits the post, Cordoba into the goal
From the beginning, an exciting game developed in Cologne, in which the guests from Leipzig had the first chance. It was the 4th minute when Nkunku found Nordi Mukiele with a change of sides on the right side. He put across to Werner, but Cologne goalkeeper Timo Horn prevented a goal.
Instead, the Cologne team was only able to cheer a good 180 seconds later: First, after a fine pass from Florian Kainz, Elvis Rexhbecaj only hit the post, but Cordoba used the rebound for the lead. A short time later the Colombian had to be injured after a two-shot with Dayot Upamecano.
Leipzig’s formula for success: Angelino on chic
The equalization fell when Cordoba was treated outside the field and the Cologne team briefly outnumbered. Leipzig’s Angelino flanked from the left into the middle, where Patrick Schick cleverly broke away from Toni Leistner and equalized with his head (20.). For Schick it was the ninth goal in the league.
First Nkunku, then Werner – RB turns the game
Shortly before the break, Konrad Laimer prevailed against three Cologneers at the midline and released Nkunku, who then ran over the horn (38th).
Just five minutes after the restart, Leipzig goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi intercepted a Cologne free kick and overplayed the advanced FC defense with a wide pass. Werner ran to Horn alone and accomplished. It was season number 25 for the national team and the starting shot for an exciting second half.
Modeste gives Cologne a little hope
It was the 55th minute when Modeste picked up a too short header from Lukas Klostermann, turned on its own axis and then scored with a flick from 22 meters to 2: 3.
However, FC’s hopes of catching up were short-lived because two minutes later it was Modeste whose defensive header landed at Dani Olmo’s feet. The Spaniard carefully circled the ball into the right corner to make it 4-2.
RB Leipzig will continue next Saturday (06.06.2020) with a home game against SC Paderborn, the 1. FC Köln has a day off and is then challenged at FC Augsburg.
