It could hardly have been written better: Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan) finally said goodbye to the Giro d’Italia with his 17th day’s victory. The 37-year-old Briton, who will end his career at the end of the season, won the final 21st stage of the 106th edition over 126 kilometers from Ostia to Rome in a mass sprint and celebrated his first success in the Astana jersey.

“Winning here in Rome is wonderful,” said Cavendish after his victory and then thanked his team: “I have great colleagues, great friends who made it possible.”

Second place went to Alex Kirsch (Trek – Segafredo) from Luxembourg, followed by the two Italians Filippo Fiorelli (Green Project – Bardiani) and Alberto Dainese (DSM) as well as Alexander Krieger (Alpecin – Deceuninck), who was the best German in fifth place.

Kämna reaches the top ten

Primoz Roglic (Jumbo – Visma) was the first Slovenian to win the overall tour of Italy. The 33-year-old won the first Grand Tour of the year 14 seconds ahead of Briton Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers), from whom he had taken the pink jersey in the mountain time trial of the penultimate stage. The podium was completed by 24-year-old Portuguese Joao Almeida (UAE Team Emirates), 1:15 minutes behind, who also won the junior classification.

Lennard Kämna (Bora – hansgrohe) finished ninth in the final standings, 7:46 minutes behind. “I would say that it worked,” said team boss Ralph Denk to Deutschlandfunk when asked whether the team had reached the goal: “To be in the top 10 on such a big tour has a certain value. Not so many Germans have done that before him.”

Jonathan Milan (Bahrain Victorious) won the points classification, while Frenchman Thibaut Pinot (Groupama – FDJ) was awarded the blue jersey as the king of the mountains. The team classification went to Bahrain Victorious.
