Cepsa Química launches a new sustainable offer, a responsible and innovative solution, which introduces renewable and recycled raw materials in the production of its main products for industrial use. The company thus goes one step further to strengthen its commitment to sustainable development and respond to the environmental objectives of its customers. The advances made in R&D in recent years have made it possible to develop this new range of products, under the brands NextLab y NextPhenol, the first developments of which are launched on the market this month. In the coming years, other products of sustainable origin and with an improved environmental footprint will be added to the portfolio.
Cepsa Química has introduced, for the first time, certified renewable raw material for the production of LAB (for the acronym in English, linear alkylbenzene), an essential component in the production of biodegradable detergents, of which it is the world leader. The resulting biodegradable detergent will retain its properties and performance, but will include linear alkylbenzene (LAB) from renewable sources in its formula for the first time.
Similarly, the company is a pioneer in manufacture of phenol from renewable and recycled raw materials, which allows, in the latter case, the use of materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill, incorporating them back into the production circuit, in the purest concept of the circular economy. Phenol is used mainly in the automotive, construction or pharmaceutical industries, among others.
This milestone constitutes the first piece of a whole global plan designed to continue leading the contribution to sustainable development in chemistry; a framework of action whose focus is the environmental improvement of production processes, as well as of the product portfolio. This is a comprehensive project that includes a plan of reduction of direct and indirect CO2 emissions, a consumption of exclusively renewable electricity, and this gradual incorporation of renewable and recycled sources that is now being launched.
Paloma Alonso, Director of the Chemistry and ESG area at Cepsa, highlighted the importance of this launch by stating that “this sustainable portfolio, which we present today, is part of our multigenerational plan to achieve the green transition and gradually endow our business with the sustainability that customers and society demand of us. This is the focus of our efforts in innovation and technology, just as it has been since our inception, when we succeeded in creating biodegradable surfactants, or developing the technology to produce LAB in a more environmentally friendly way. With this we contribute to the sustainable development of the societies and economies in which we operate while leading the future of the chemical industry ”.
Both products will be initially manufactured at the company’s plants in Spain. Mayorga Bridge in Campo de Gibraltar (Cádiz) will be responsible for the development of NextLab and Palos de la Frontera (Huelva), of NextPhenol. In addition, both facilities have the ISCC + certification system that allows the identification and guarantee of sustainable production from origin to delivery, using the material balance methodology. This methodology ensures that the sustainable products produced correspond to the amount of sustainable raw material introduced into the process.
In March 2021, the company obtained certification under the ISCC + system for the Puente Mayorga plant. Similarly, in 2019 it achieved the same certification at its Palos de la Frontera plant for the production of phenol and acetone. Currently, Cepsa Química is working to get certified for cumene and AMS at Palos de la Frontera and at the Shanghai plant, as well as at LAB and LABSA at the Detén (Brazil) and Bécancour (Canada) plants.
