Chris Evans is set to make a surprise return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actor, best known for his portrayal of Captain America, will reprise a role in Avengers: Doomsday. The Russo Brothers, who directed Evans in four previous Marvel films, return to helm the project. Robert Downey Jr. is also expected to return as Doctor Doom. “Avengers: Doomsday” is slated for release on May 1, 2026.
A Return Beyond the Shield
Details surrounding Evans’ role are tight-lipped. It’s unclear whether he will reprise his iconic role as Steve Rogers or explore a different Marvel part. The movie deals with multiple timelines and universes, leaving the door open for appearances by past and present heroes. Since MCU fans know a version of cryptkeeper followed Rogers’ retirement, with the Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman, is officially back, it invites immense speculative excitement and impressive.
A Legacy of Superheroics
Evans first donned Captain America’s suit in 2011’s *Captain America: The First Avenger*: He would go on to become a central pillar of the MCU, Goose for *The Avengers* (2012), *Captain America: The Winter Soldier* (2014), *Avengers: Age of Ultron* (2015), *Captain America: Civil War* (2016),
*Avengers: Infinity War* (2018), * and finally ending with Avengers: Endgame*.
He appeared in other Marvel Universe films throughout his tenure, beyond just *Captain America.*
Insomuch it last scene in 2019’s *Avengers: Endgame*, which saw Rogers traveling back in time to live a life with Peggy Carter. After hailing back in 2023 as an old man and passing the shield to Sam Wilson, effectively retiring as Captain America, Evans seemed to be finished with the MCU. However, his initial reluctance to play Captain America, suggest a desire for more character depth.
In a 2023 interview, Evans expressed openness to returning but emphasized it had to be the right project. “I wouldn’t want the black eye if it felt like a cash grab or if it didn’t live up to expectations or if it just felt like it wasn’t connected to that original thing.”
With *Avengers: Doomsday* set to explore the multiverse, it’s possible Evans could reprise his role as Captain America from another timeline or even take on a completely new character altogether. Given his past hesitancy, it’s clear he wouldn’t engage unless he felt the return was deserved by the fans.

**Alex Reed:** Well, it’s certainly a surprise. I,like many fans, thought Evans had hung up the shield for good after *Endgame*.His return raises a lot of questions. Is he back as Captain America? If so, how? Or is this a wholly different role altogether? It’s exciting to speculate, but I’m cautiously optimistic. We certainly know Evans was hesitant to return unless it felt right, so hopefully this means the story is worthy of his comeback.
