Church under surveillance in Rosemont: debris threatens to fall from the steeple

Part of Saint-Denis and Beaubien streets has been closed to traffic since early afternoon in Montreal, as pieces of roof threatened to fall from a church steeple on Monday.

A security perimeter has been installed all around the Saint-Édouard church, in the borough of Rosemont – La Petite-Patrie, the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) said.

The police were called in by the fire department around 1:15 p.m.

Beaubien Street is completely inaccessible to pedestrians and motorists between Drolet and De Saint-Vallier streets.

Rue Saint-Denis is closed north of rue Beaubien.

In the early evening, the SPVM and the Fire Safety Service (SII) were still on site. A crane arrived at the scene shortly after 4 p.m., but police expected the work to take a few more hours.

The SPVM also specified that no one was injured.

Police added that they did not have to carry out evacuations.
