Coerced and forced, the government reopens cinemas and theaters

This Tuesday afternoon, the Council of State disavowed one of the decisions of the last Concertation Committee (Codeco), that of closing the cultural sector. The Council of State in fact ruled in favor of a theater producer, Mathieu Pinte, who had lodged an appeal requesting the suspension of the royal decree requiring the closure of theaters.

Forced by the decision of the Council of State, the government was indeed obliged to review its decision. The main ministers met by videoconference late Tuesday afternoon. They agreed that a “remedial” decree will be prepared by Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden (CD&V). This decree would bring theaters but also cinemas and concert halls back to the health regime that had been theirs before the Codeco on December 22. Namely: obligation to remain seated and wear a mask, presentation of the Covid Save Ticket and a maximum capacity of 200 people. A virtual Codeco will be organized to formally approve the text this Wednesday.
