The Walloon Public Water Company advises citizens to protect water meters and pipes, ensuring that the material used for insulation does not absorb moisture.
LThe Walloon Water Company (SWDE) recalls on Monday the importance of caulking water meters and pipes if they are in a place where the temperature could drop below zero degrees. The announced cold wave could cause damage, underlines the public company.
“Leaks caused by freezing do not only cause material and financial damage for the occupants of the dwelling concerned. If many leaks appear after the meters have frozen, the quantities of water lost can disrupt the supply of a district or even a municipality, ”explains SWDE, adding that this damage is very difficult to detect.
The state-owned company advises citizens to protect water meters and pipes, ensuring that the material used for insulation does not absorb moisture. A blanket, polystyrene sheets or polyethylene foam do the trick, says SWDE, but fabric and paper should be avoided.
The owners of vacation homes or any unoccupied building are requested to be particularly vigilant.
