Measure will begin on September 19. The first flights will link Colombia with the United States, Ecuador, Mexico, Bolivia, Brazil, the Dominican Republic and Guatemala.
The Colombian government authorized this Tuesday 15-S the gradual reopening of international flights starting next September 21 from four cities after a suspension of almost six months due to the restrictions imposed by the coronavirus pandemic.
The first flights will link Colombia with the United States, Ecuador, Mexico, Bolivia, Brazil, the Dominican Republic and Guatemala, said the Minister of Transport, Angela María Orozco, who explained that next Saturday, before the gradual reopening, there will be two air operations pilot from Cartagena de Indias to the United States.
“As of September 19 in the city of Cartagena, international flights of origin and destination will be restored, and as of September 21, a gradual reactivation will be carried out in four airports in the country in what we have called phase 1,” said the minister.
The Ministry of Transportation authorized the El Dorado airports in Bogotá for this first phase; Alfonso Bonilla Aragón, from Cali; José María Córdova, from Medellín, and Rafael Núñez, from Cartagena.
International flights were suspended in Colombia on March 23, but the decline in the last few days of the curve of infections and deaths from the pandemic allowed the Government to enable this plan in which the opening of other destinations is also evaluated according to the measures of biosecurity of each country.
“The international air passenger reactivation is carried out after the favorable concept of the Ministry of Health for the suspension of the restriction of the entry of international travelers to the country, based on the current state of the pandemic,” Orozco added.
To make this decision, the Government took into account three criteria: the authorization of international flights in other countries, the operating capacity of airports and the commercial interest of the airlines.
“International airports will be strictly subject to the control of biosafety protocols, just as in domestic flights, and sanitary slots will be required that allow balancing the airport’s operating capacity with biosafety protocols,” the minister explained.
Colombia accumulates 728,590 coronavirus infections, of which 95,787 cases remain active, and 23,288 people have died.
“A negative covid test is required to allow international travelers to enter (Colombia). For the purposes of departure, it will depend on what each country to which the flights are required, and thus it will be informed in a timely manner by the airlines so that people have access to the information that will be required, “Orozco added.
The Ministry of Health ordered other measures such as that passengers must use a face mask from entering the airport to arrival at the destination, fill out prior flight registration before entering the immigration control posts and be at the airports three hours before departure. the scheduled departure of the trip.
