Confronting Water Scarcity: Urgent Global Action for a Sustainable Future

The UAE published a detailed discussion paper calling for an international response, urgent global action, and enhanced cooperation to confront the urgent and worsening global challenge of water scarcity.

The discussion paper, entitled “Successive Repercussions: Water Scarcity – The Hidden Threat to World Security and Prosperity,” addressed the problem of global water scarcity and the main reasons that led to the expansion of this problem. The paper highlighted the various impacts and challenges resulting from water scarcity, the features of which are evident today in various parts of the world. The discussion paper also identified a set of possible solutions to confront this worsening problem as quickly as possible.

The discussion paper, which was published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the sidelines of the general debate of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, aims to send an open global call to all members of the international community to work together in new ways and methods to confront this worsening challenge.

His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs, said in the context of announcing the publication of the discussion paper: “The UAE is deeply concerned about the problem of water scarcity, due to its increasing catastrophic risks that represent an urgent threat to our world. Accordingly, the UAE published a discussion paper.” It aims to mobilize a coordinated global response to confront this issue, propose a new formula for effective international cooperation, and launch a multifaceted response to deal with this problem and its consequences that threaten the security, stability and prosperity of the world.”

The discussion paper confirmed that, based on the latest statistics, four billion people around the world currently suffer from water scarcity for at least one month annually, and this number is likely to increase in the coming years.

His Highness added: “The UAE government believes that the urgent and immediate risks and threats to the problem of water scarcity have not been clearly recognized at the global level, and as a result, our international community is seriously retreating from its efforts to confront this challenge, and this may result in catastrophic results that will be of no consequence.” A country that is safe from its effects and subsequent repercussions.. Hence, we must all search for new ways to cooperate urgently and effectively to address this global problem.

Emphasizing the UAE’s commitment to finding effective solutions to this problem, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan said: “As a country on the front line with the water scarcity crisis, and a long-time advocate of the necessity of constructive dialogue and international cooperation to resolve it, the UAE is determined to “Enhancing global awareness of this issue, and performing its leadership role in mobilizing a decisive and coordinated international response to confront this problem that threatens the future of humanity.”
