Conversion bonus and car bonus maintained until July

“The conversion bonus and the ecological bonus will be maintained at the same level” until July 1, 2021, announced the Minister of Ecological Transition Barbara Pompili on Friday on France Info. The conversion bonus for the purchase of a low-polluting vehicle will thus be maintained up to 5,000 euros and the bonus for the purchase of electric or hybrid vehicles to 6,000 euros.

In June, a third of the conversion bonus quota had already passed, according to the National Council of Automotive Professions (CNPA). This measure, the number of which was capped at 200,000 premiums, subsidizes the purchase of recent vehicles, whether new or used, in exchange for the scrapping of an old vehicle. The CNPA, which at the time considered the automotive sector “very fragile and the market outlook very uncertain” was already working with the government “on the terms of the next conversion bonus”.

The ecological bonus which had been reinforced up to 7,000 euros the day after the first confinement in March 2020, following a drop in vehicle sales, had meanwhile been reduced to the current level of 6,000 euros maximum in 2021. It had to be be reduced again in 2022.

“Changing our habits”

On France Info, the minister justified this choice to maintain this aid. “We are funding the switch to electric cars so that the fuel costs only 10 euros. We have to face the short term but also change our habits so as not to depend on these uncontrollable increases in oil and gas, ”she explained, urging the French to come out of dependence on oil.

These two cumulative premiums complete the inflation allowance of 100 euros for people earning less than 2,000 euros net per month, announced Thursday by Jean Castex to compensate for the increase in fuel prices.
