The pressure on Switzerland and the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) continues to increase: after several European countries, including Germany and Austria, the USA is now turning around on the question of protective masks.
After the two major cities of California, Los Angeles and San Diego, advanced on Thursday, the federal government in Washington followed suit on Friday. In the daily Corona Update, US President Donald Trump (73) announced that the American health authority CDC immediately recommends wearing face masks in public spaces. “But we don’t want people to wear medical masks now,” Trump said. The recommendation relates to masks made of fabric, which you can make, for example, at home. Professional masks must be reserved for medical staff.
It’s a 180-degree turnaround that the U.S. government is taking on protective masks. Trump follows the advice of his group of experts around top virologist Anthony Fauci (79) and ex-military doctor Deborah Birx (64). So far, the CDC health authority has explicitly advised healthy people without symptoms not to wear masks.
Trump doesn’t want to wear a mask himself
Trump’s statements about wearing a protective mask in the subsequent question and answer session caused confusion. The US president has chosen not to follow the recommendation of his own health agency. “I’m not going to wear a protective mask,” he said. Then he made an explanatory statement: «I’m sitting in the Oval Office, behind this nice resolute desk. I meet presidents, prime ministers, dictators, kings, queens – I don’t know, somehow I don’t see it for myself. »
After all, the US President and his Vice Mike Pence (60) are protected by the Corona virus with new measures, as is clear from a message from Friday. The White House wants to contain the risk of infection of the country’s two most important political office holders. Therefore, “every person” who is in the immediate vicinity of Trump or Pence will now be tested on Covid-19. This should also determine whether the people affected may carry the highly contagious virus without showing symptoms.
US government calms people without health insurance
During Friday’s daily Corona Update, Vice President Mike Pence also announced good news for the roughly 30 million Americans currently living without health insurance. The government would “ensure” that no one would have to fear any treatment costs related to the coronavirus. “We’ll take care of the bills,” he promised. When Trump was subsequently asked whether this promise also applies to the estimated 11 million illegals in the United States, he replied: “We’ll deal with that later.”
Will the presidential election be postponed?
Another topic was the upcoming US election in November. Several states had to postpone their area codes because of the coronavirus pandemic. Trump was asked on Friday if the election date could be postponed. The US President does not want to know about it: “The election will take place on November 3rd.”
A postponement of the presidential election is hardly conceivable anyway. The election date is set by law. So a change by the US Congress would be needed, which could also be challenged in courts. In addition, only a few weeks could be won in this way. Because the further schedule is even stipulated in the constitution and thus even more rigid: the start date for the new congress on January 3 and the inauguration of the president on January 20.
More deaths than ever in 24 hours
Such political issues are currently overshadowed by the steadily increasing deaths associated with Covid-19. As of Friday, the number of deaths in the country rose to over 7,000. Over 1419 new deaths were reported within 24 hours – more than ever before. No other country is more affected by the corona virus than the USA: on Friday evening over 276,000 cases were already known.
