Coronavirus: EU turns to US for AstraZeneca vaccines

With these American vaccines, the European Commission wants to ensure that the quantities of vaccines promised by AstraZeneca can be delivered.

LHe European Union wishes to obtain the vaccines of the pharmaceutical group AstraZeneca produced in the United States. It will ask the US government to approve the export of millions of doses, the British economic newspaper Financial Times reported on Saturday, based on sources within the EU.

With these American vaccines, the European Commission wants to ensure that the quantities of vaccines promised by AstraZeneca can be delivered. The Anglo-Swedish pharmaceutical company has repeatedly failed to deliver on its promises, due to production problems.

For its part, the United States has indicated that all vaccines produced in its territory should be used in the first place for the vaccination of Americans. Washington has ordered 300 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine. However, the vaccination has not yet been approved by US regulators, so the European request would have a chance to be successful.

The EU also wants to ensure that vaccine production does not pose a problem under US rules. The manufacture of so-called mRNA vaccines, such as those from Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna, requires certain ingredients for which the EU depends on the US.
