Ten sectors of the Shunyi district in the northeast of the Chinese capital were cordoned off on Tuesday. This is the first reconfinement of Beijing since the wave recorded at the beginning of the summer.
This follows 16 new domestic contaminations and three asymptomatic cases identified since December 18.
The worst affected district of Shunyi has been banned from couriers. The confined areas include an industrial zone, six villages and three buildings, a city official said, Reuters news agency reported.
Several containment measures have been adopted: the cancellation of large-scale gatherings or the increase of metro trains to better distribute the flow of travelers.
With the approach of the Chinese New Year celebrations, concerts and New Year’s illuminations have been canceled while schools have banned their access to outsiders.
The city called on residents not to leave Beijing during the holidays.
