FULL ICUs IN CATALONIA WHILE ALL THE DATA GETS WORSE

The epidemic curve in Catalonia has turned around and is rising again, with the ucis full and a virus spread speed (Rt) that is already 0.99, four hundredths more than this Monday, with a tendency for this Wednesday to already exceed 1, while the risk of regrowth (EPG) , which measures the potential growth rate of the epidemic, is growing for the second day in a row.

According to epidemiological data updated by the Department of Health, there are 1,973 hospitalized COVID patients56 less than the day before, of which 593 are seriously ill in the ICU, five more.

The speed of reproduction of the disease is escalating rapidly since Friday, probably due to the spread of the most contagious variants of SARS-CoV-2 -the British, the Brazilian and the South African-, while 1,482 new infections have been reported in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of infected since the start of the pandemic to 547,107. In the last week, 10,077 new cases of COVID-19 have been diagnosed, which gives a daily average of 1,439 infections.

Another indicator that the epidemic worsens is positivity, that is, the percentage of PCRs and antigen tests that are positive, which has risen to 5.43%, three tenths more than this Monday, and above the 5% that the WHO establishes to consider controllable the pandemic.

The death toll since the first death from COVID in Catalonia, which was on March 6, 2020, now stands at 20,512 victims, six of them notified since Monday, with 267 deaths in the last seven days, that is, an average of 38 daily, a figure that is gradually decreasing. The maximum number of daily deaths in the second wave was registered on November 5, with 89 deaths in one day, and in the third wave it was January 25, with 97 deaths in 24 hours.

The risk of regrowth (EPG), which is the potential growth index of the epidemic, stood at 268 points this Tuesday, five points more than on Monday -the second consecutive day of growth-, while the cumulative incidence of cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 14 days (IA14) has dropped to 277, eleven cases less than the day before.
