Coronavirus: World Athletics postponed to July 2022

World Athletics announced on Wednesday the new dates for the next World Athletics Championships. They were to be held from August 6 to 15, 2021, but the postponement of the Tokyo Olympic Games (from 2020 to 2021) forced the organizers to reschedule them from July 15 to 24, 2022, still in Eugene, in the United States.

“The World Athletics Council approved the new dates this week after lengthy discussions with sport stakeholders, including the organizers of two other major championships to be held in July-August 2022, the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham (July 27-August 7) and the European Multisport Championships in Munich (August 11-21), “the statement said.

The International Athletics Federation also specifies: “the new calendar will avoid a direct conflict between one of these major events and, with rigorous programming, will guarantee athletes to participate in three world-class competitions”.

The 2020 European Championships in Paris maintained… for now

Organized at the Stade Charléty in Paris from August 25 to 30, the European Championships in the discipline are still maintained for the time being. Tuesday, André Giraud, president of the French athletics federation, however announced on the website of his Federation the suspension of all competitions at least until the end of July.

Thus, the French Elite Championships, initially planned for Angers from June 19 to 21, are for the time being, at a minimum, postponed. Above all, they remain conditioned to the maintenance or not of the European Championships. In association with the European Athletics Association, the Federation should take a decision in the coming weeks.
