Beijing: The former minister of state who was in charge of the public security department in China has been sentenced to life imprisonment in a corruption case.
Former minister Sun Lijun, 53, was convicted on charges of embezzling $91 million, undermining the unity of the ruling Communist Party and abdicating during the fight against Covid-19. In 2017, Lijun oversaw the suppression of pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong. Lijun was also part of the team sent to Wuhan in 2020 to oversee measures to control the spread of Covid-19.
The sentencing provincial court said Lijun was found to have made money by abusing his position between 2001-2020.
A number of former officials have been caught up in President Xi Jinping’s anti-corruption drive ahead of the Chinese Communist Party Congress.
