[ワガドゥグ 2日 ロイター] – After a September 30 coup in Burkina Faso, West Africa, the alleged military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, accepted a conditional resignation offered by President Damiba to avoid further violence. Religious leaders announced on the 2nd.

Traoré said he had agreed to seven terms, including guaranteeing the safety of Damiba and the soldiers who supported him, and complying with a plan to return to constitutional rule by July 2024.

A separate statement said he would stand in for president until a civilian or military interim president is appointed in the coming weeks.

Damiba could not be reached for comment. He left the country on Thursday, his relatives told Archyde.com.

Traoré said earlier that order was being restored after the fighting that followed the coup and protests against the French embassy.

There are divisions within the military, and many soldiers appear to be seeking Russia’s help as the influence of their former colonial power, France, is waning.

“We want cooperation with Russia. We need the expulsion of Damiba and France,” said pro-coup demonstrators outside the French embassy.
