In Canada

Ontario has reported for the second day in a row more than 1,800 cases.

Quebec and Ontario alone added 66 deaths in total on Saturday to 26 days of Christmas. The country will cross the psychological barrier of 12,000 dead this weekend.

Ontario had set a record Friday with 1,855 cases. It identified 1,822 of them on Saturday, as well as 29 more deaths, bringing its cumulative data to 113,038 infections and 3,624 deaths.

At the end of the morning, the country had 362,366 cases (+3302) and 11,960 deaths (+66).

Other provinces have updated their figures, such as Newfoundland and Labrador (+2 cases) and New Brunswick (+4), as well as the Yukon Territory (+3).

Will Canadians really get together for Christmas? Rising cases across the country appear to pave the way for tough decisions from the provinces in the weeks to come. In Quebec, for example, the Legault government must confirm on December 17 whether Quebecers will be able to meet at least twice, between December 24 and 27, for celebrations with 10 people or less.

“Right now, we have the opportunity to act collectively with health authorities to bring infection rates back to a safer path,” said Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam.

“We are being asked two things: to follow the advice of local public health authorities while measures are put in place to control the spread in the population and to maintain personal protection measures to avoid becoming infected and spreading the virus” , she added, urging people to stay at home or isolate themselves if they have symptoms, even mild, in addition to continuing to respect physical distancing and wearing a mask in the presence of people who are not part of his household.

At the start of the afternoon, the country had 362,375 cases (+3311) and 11,960 deaths (+66).
