Spring is coming and is accompanied by a rise in temperatures. However, a lot of French people have the drop in their nose. Flu, cold and… Covid-19! According to Public Health France, cases are increasing again. Some media are already talking about the tenth epidemic wave.

“In week 11 (March 13 to March 19, 2023), incidence and positivity rates increased for the second week consecutive”notes the health agency in its latest epidemiological point published on March 23. Fortunately, these rates remain “at low levels”.

At the hospital, the number of visits to the emergency room is also up with +20%, consultations with SOS Médecins also (+29%), “but less markedly than last week”. It concerns more children than adults: +41% for minors vs. +27% for procedures at SOS Médecins and +50% vs. +17% for emergencies. On the contrarynew hospitalizations are down: -13%.

Most of the people who have tested positive in recent weeks are infected with the recombinant XBB, born from sous-variants d’Omicron.

Can we therefore speak of a new epidemic wave? Yes, according to Mircea Sofonea, epidemiologist and lecturer in epidemiology at the University of Montpellier. We are in the wave and the peak is not for nowhe says to BFM TV. Since the end of February, we have observed this increase in the number of reproduction, that is to say when it is strictly greater than 1, we have a recovery. There it is between 1.1 and 1.2.”

Hand washing, distancing… Barrier gestures as well as vaccination remain recommended by the health agency to protect the most vulnerable people.
