Uncertainty hangs over the Haut-Plateau, a few hours before the first descent from Crans-Montana. The weather forecast is indeed quite variable for the weekend of the World Cup races. The two descents and the planned super-G should however be able to stand, provided that the models do not lie. Update with Frédéric Glassey, director of meteorology for MeteoNews.
“The foehn is present these days in Valais, but this is not necessarily bad news, explains the expert. The favorable niches exist. ” In fact, there shouldn’t be any major concerns for the first descent on Friday. “It’s going to snow a few inches next night, between 5 and 10, which shouldn’t prevent the race from going on. It will be variable, but expect a white day, even if there will be no snowstorm or wind. ” The foehn and the Lombarde could blow at 40 or 50 km / h at the start, which remains reasonable. However, the organizers plan to postpone the start from 10 a.m. to 1.15 p.m. in order to be able to prepare the track as well as possible and to start the event after the first descent from Kitzbühel. “I’m not sure it’s the best choice, admits Frédéric Glassey. The time slot will not necessarily be ideal because the sky will fill up again in the afternoon, before the showers are reactivated. ”
What fate for the super-G on Sunday?
This snowy episode will then be more substantial. Expect 15 to 20 centimeters of fresh snow. “But there will again be a favorable window in the morning, reassures the meteorologist. However, things will turn sour again in the afternoon. ” This disruption is expected to last until Sunday, before a possible midday lull, which could allow the super-G to be launched. “It is clear that we should not expect great beauty, but as long as the right choices are made by analyzing several models, it must pass,” continues Frédéric Glassey.
It must be said that the situation is rather new for the organizers, who usually host the Cirque Blanc at the end of February. The layer of snow that has fallen in recent days is significant on the Haut-Plateau and significant work had to be done on the Mont Lachaux piste. With the exception of Lara Gut-Behrami, who was very critical at the end of the first training session, almost all of the skiers noted the good quality of the slope, given the circumstances.
Saturday could be long in Kitzbühel
For Kitzbühel, the situation could be quite similar this weekend. “For the race on Friday, there will be no problem, decrypts the expert. On the other hand, the descent on Saturday seems to me a little more compromised. Expect the departure to be delayed. Visibility could be problematic. It is in fact the disturbance which will be in Crans-Montana the previous night which will occur at that time in Kitzbühel. ” Finally, on Sunday, the forecasts are more uncertain. “But it should be fine for a super-G, adds Frédéric Glassey. I remember Didier Cuche who won his last victory in a snowstorm, so… ”
