BRUSSELS The increase in teleworking due to the coronavirus crisis now results in the prices of keyboards and computer mice being included in the consumer’s basket. This basket groups together reference goods making it possible to estimate inflation in Belgium and therefore to determine the possible indexation of wages and social allowances. Inflation or the cost of living is calculated on the basis of the consumer price index, which in turn is based on the prices of a whole series of products and services. This basket is reviewed and updated every year in order to keep its composition up to date. In 2021, five “cookies” were added to the basket: vitamins, minerals and food supplements; consultation with the psychologist; roof box; computer mouse; and keyboard. These last two products were added in particular because of the increase in teleworking. Other new representative products linked to Covid-19, such as the mouth mask and the disinfectant gel for example, had already been automatically incorporated into the calculation of the index during the course of 2020. Finally, the definition of two witnesses is temporarily changed as a result of the crisis, namely plane tickets and organized holidays abroad. Only European destinations are temporarily retained due to current restrictions.
