The thousands of workers employed in the 440 Aldi stores in Belgium are holding their breath. After the crisis hitting their colleagues at Delhaize, is it their turn to soon be hit by restructuring or other cost-cutting measures?
The German press published an alarmist article on Monday. According to the business newspaper Handelsblatt, Aldi’s sales would have increased in 2022, but the supermarket chain is still loss-making operationally. “The company is facing a major cost problem”. We are talking here about Aldi Nord, the subsidiary in northern Germany which also oversees the 440 Aldi in Belgium.
In Germany, the chain would still make profits, but these are decreasing. The specialized magazine Gondola speaks of a profit margin down 1.6% on a turnover which nevertheless reached 35 billion euros last year.
In France and Denmark, on the other hand, negative figures were recorded. In Denmark, Aldi has even sold stores to competitors, but in France the discounter wants to stay in business. The newspaper Handelsblatt announces that the management of Aldi Nord would work on “the largest restructuring in the history of the company”…
What about Belgium? Myriam Delmée, president of Setca, does not want to panic.
