The former Minister of Housing and member of the Political System Commission of the Constitutional Convention, Christian Monckeberg, criticized the approval of the unicameral system.

President Castillo (of Peru) himself is already being talked about thinking of removing him -he stated- In my opinion, presidentialism with a unicameral system it also strongly harms the presence of the regions in decision-making“.
“A unicameral congress is elected according to population. Where are more deputies going to be elected: in Santiago, Concepción, Valparaíso… ¿And in the rest of the regions?”, he questioned: “That the constituents begin to give explanations in their regions -Those who are for unicameralism- because Santiago is going to have 80 deputies and Magallanes is going to have 2 deputies“.
“Because we propose a different bicameral system, where there is a political Chamber of Deputies, to make legislative decisions, and a more territorial senate in which all regions have the same number of senatorsMonckeberg explained.
“I believe that the constituent process must be closed well, with concessions and trying to reach good understandings,” said the former minister, emphasizing that “what happened yesterday in the Political System -and to that I add the previous definitions in the Economic Model Y with the Supreme Court– (…) are signs that call for concern“.
