Food prices have risen sharply in Belgium. More and more Belgians are therefore deciding to cross the border to do their shopping in France. In the Carrefour d’Amentières car park, cars registered in Belgium have always been numerous. But lately, their number would be on the rise, according to our colleagues from The voice of the North.

Cédric, a Belgian who has been getting water for several years from our neighbours, explains that he now buys other foodstuffs in French supermarkets: “In Belgium, the water pack costs 3 to 4€ more expensive” , he said to the VDN. “Sodas, cat food, cheese, eggs and dairy products in general. And it is especially interesting for cat food and bleach cartons! adds Sandrine, from Comines.

As for dairy products, the Lactel milk pack is sold on average at 7 euros in France, against 13 euros in Belgium… almost double!

Marie and Gaëlle, for their part, completely deserted the Belgian supermarkets for months, when inflation reached its peak: “On a trolley, there is a difference of €30 or €40. For the week, at three, I get by with 90€ of shopping on the French side. If it’s in Belgium, it’s at least 120€. Almost everything is cheaper in France,” says Gaëlle. “And then with us, there are not often promotions. In France, you manage to have two bought one free. Or prize pools with loyalty cards, ”she added.
