Ray tracing is outdated. This is in any case the message from Nvidia left this year at the Game Developers Conference. The American chipmaker chose the Cyberpunk 2077 game to showcase path tracing, its new graphic rendering technique. It simulates the behavior of light in a 3D scene by tracing rays from the camera to light sources. The overdrive mode of the title of the Polish publisher CD Projekt Red will be compatible from April while the games “Minecraft”, “Portal” and “Quake II” already adopt the technology but with rather limited graphics.

Nvidia is pushing adoption of its latest expensive graphics chips.

While ray tracing tracks a single beam of light across a virtual scene, path tracing tracks light as it bounces off an environment, more realistically mimicking how it works in the physical world. It determines how nearby surfaces reflect or absorb light, producing soft, precise shadows that more easily convince our brains that we are looking at a natural, real scene.

As the relief According to Engadget, Hollywood has used path tracing for decades, but it was a slow and expensive process that couldn’t work on consumer devices or in real time. To take advantage of it, you will still need to equip yourself with the latest expensive graphics chips from Nvidia. of the GeForce RTX 40 series.
