The Qatari Nasser Al-Attiyah (Toyota) offered himself a fifth stage success on Thursday in the Dakar 2021, ahead of the French Stéphane Peterhansel (Mini), firmly installed at the top of the general classification on the eve of the arrival on Friday at Jeddah.
Al-Attiyah covered the 470 kilometers of the 11th stage between Al Ula and Yanbu in 4 h 34 min 24 sec and beat Peterhansel by 1 min 56 sec and Spaniard Carlos Sainz by 2 min 26 sec.
Al-Attiyah, who has six successes in this Dakar 2021 if we take into account the prologue, should find it difficult to overtake Peterhansel during the 12th and final stage on Friday, with “only” 225 kilometers of special and his arrival on the shores of the Red Sea.
Peterhansel, nicknamed “Mister Dakar” because of his thirteen victories in the rally-raid, has a hand on the trophy, since he has a 15 min 5 sec lead over Al-Attiyah. The 3rd overall, Sainz, is more than an hour behind Peterhansel.
Peterhansel, 55, won his first Dakar in 1991, just thirty years ago.
