Daniel Ricciardo advises McLaren F1 successor Oscar Piastri[F1-Gate.com]

Daniel Ricciardo has offered advice to his junior Oscar Piastri, who will replace him at McLaren F1.

McLaren has decided to replace Daniel Ricciardo with Oscar Piastri in 2023. Piastri officially made his McLaren debut at post-season testing in Abu Dhabi last month.

After impressive results in the junior category, Oscar Piastri was embroiled in contract disputes between Alpine F1 Team and McLaren earlier this year. Inevitably, Piastri will be under a lot of pressure as he makes his debut in F1 with much fanfare, beating out eight-time Grand Prix winner Daniel Ricciardo.

On the Beyond the Grid podcast, Daniel Ricciardo offered advice to 21-year-old Oscar Piastri.

“I think it’s just going to be out on the track and driving,” said Daniel Ricciardo.

“It may sound like a very lazy reaction, but I can’t tell you to go out and drive. Learn, be a sponge, drive.”

“Don’t set your standards too high. If you do better than you expected, that’s great, but race by race you have to improve.”

“As long as I feel like I’m learning and improving every race, I think that’s all I can ask of myself.”

Daniel Ricciardo’s exit from the McLaren F1 team comes after a difficult two years on the grid where he struggled with performance.

Daniel Ricciardo struggled to get used to the McLaren car during his two years with former teammate Norris and was often outpaced.

However, I believe the problems Daniel Ricciardo has endured will give McLaren and Oscar Piastri a head start in avoiding similar problems.

“Also, I think they learned a lot from our two years, even if they didn’t fully understand my side with McLaren.”

“So I think all that knowledge can be transferred to Oscar. From that perspective, I think they can have a little head start.”
