David Dehenauw gives us his predictions for the next few days

In the gloom of the news, this is undoubtedly the good news that will please many people: the sun is coming for several days and with it, the mild temperatures which will oscillate, for the maximum, between 25 and 30 degrees on the great center for two weeks. The National Day festivities will therefore probably take place under the sun, according to David Dehenauw, head of the scientific department of weather forecasts at the IRM.

This Sunday, the temperatures will therefore continue their gradual rise with maximums of the order of 16 to 19ºC in the Ardennes, around 20 or 21ºC by the sea, between 22 and 24ºC elsewhere, and around 25ºC in Belgian Lorraine.

Temperatures will begin to rise again from Monday with maximums of 20 to 23ºC in the Ardennes, around 23ºC on the coast, and 24 to 27ºC elsewhere, under a weak to moderate north to northeast wind.

“The maximum will be around 28 or 29 ºC for Tuesday and 30 ºC for Wednesday”, specifies the IRM meteorologist. “Then a small drop of 25-26ºC on Thursday and Friday. Then it goes back up again to 29 or 30ºC for several days”.

“Summer for two weeks”

“And then a drop towards the period around 25-26 ºC in the period from July 18 to 21,” adds David Dehenauw. “But it’s still summery for almost two weeks.”

One year after the terrible floods of July 2021, the question is obviously on everyone’s lips: what about the weather forecast for the last ten days of July. Will it be marked by thunderstorms as is often the case after a period of very good weather in Belgium?

“In terms of thunderstorms, let’s be clear: for next week, there will be absolutely nothing”, slice David Dehenauw. “I’m pretty confident. And if there is a storm, then it will be very localized. But there is no indication that this will be the case. On the other hand, for the rest, it is too early to say if there will be storms or not”.

“More frequent and more severe…”

Even if the beneficial effects of the sun delight us in the short term, they are also worrying because they directly testify to global warming which is inexorably accelerating.

The multiplication of heat waves is a direct consequence of global warming. There will be more and more heat episodes. “Heat waves similar to those observed this year are expected to become more frequent and more severe in the coming years, both in Europe and beyond”, confirms Carlo Buontempo, director of the Copernicus Service for the climate change.
