“Debating the Prime Minister’s Call to Pause New Environmental Standards”

2023-05-24 15:11:00

I regret the harsh attacks on the Prime Minister from party presidents. I read the words of Rajae Maouane (Ecolo) and Paul Magnette (PS). These attacks below the belt are unacceptable. I wish there was more respect in this debate from some party presidents. We have often regretted it on our part and therefore, here too, we must show restraint.

We can understand the reaction of environmentalists: the Prime Minister took them by surprise…

Caught short ? This debate has been alive at European level for quite some time. You will have noted Emmanuel Macron’s statements last week in France (about this normative break, Editor’s note). Alexander De Croo says exactly the same thing. Overall, since the war in Ukraine, at European level, there has been a change. The war has brought food sovereignty and energy sovereignty back to the fore, but also the need to reindustrialise Europe. It’s not new. These subjects are very present in the news. In France, reindustrialization is even a major subject. I regret that this debate did not take place earlier in Belgium. To say that Alexander’s exit came out of nowhere is not true. It is normal for the Prime Minister to give his position.

“This is the start of the campaign”: will the Greens bring down the De Croo government?

Does the MR approve of Alexander De Croo’s line?

Alexander De Croo’s line is the right one, we share it. The MR is in favor of high climate ambitions but European countries cannot be the only ones in the world to keep such a fast tempo. A balance must be found: these ambitions cannot have major consequences on the increase in energy costs and food costs, nor lead to the disappearance of European industry. It would be really too detrimental.

On the method, all the same, shouldn’t the Prime Minister have discussed his position with his partners in the federal government? He does what he has been able to reproach some of his ministers: a media outlet which puts the other parties of the majority before the fait accompli.

Unfortunately, Van Peteghem (CD&V) released his tax reform in the press, Karine Lalieux (PS) released her pension reform in the press… I also saw the ecologists take positions in the press first before speak in government. It’s a bit like the Vivaldi method and that’s a shame. I agree. But each party participates in it.

In such a context, the renewal of the Vivaldi in 2024 becomes less likely…

There are nuances between the seven parties of the majority, this is not a scoop. But we managed to get a lot of agreements. No conclusions should be drawn from this passage.

Is Alexander De Croo right to want to freeze the adoption of new environmental standards?
