Dell launches XPS 13 series…

Multiple foreign media outlets such as CNN, The Verge, and Ars Technica reported the release of the Windows laptop XPS 13 series equipped with the latest Intel chip from US PC maker Dell.

Dell XPS 13 · XPS 13 2-in-1 Specifications

The Dell XPS 13 is Dell’s thinnest and lightest 13-inch touchscreen laptop to date. At 13.9mm thick and weighing 2.59lbs (about 1.17kg), it is slightly thinner and lighter than its predecessor. It supports 4K USD+ resolution, and the display resolution is 3,840×2,400 pixels. The brightness is 500 nits.

The processor is Intel’s latest 12th generation chip, i7-1250U. The RAM capacity is 32 GB, and the storage capacity is supported up to 1 TB. It was equipped with two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, but unlike its predecessor, the microSD card and the 3.5mm headphone jack disappeared. The battery capacity is slightly reduced compared to the previous model at 51 Whr, but it can be used for 12 hours with a 100% charge.

A 720p camera is adopted as the webcam, and the operating system supports Windows 11 for general users and Ubuntu 20.04 for developers. The retail price is $999.

The XPS 13 2-in-1 can be used as both a tablet and a laptop since it has a 360-degree rotatable hinge and a detachable keyboard. A 13-inch display is applied, the display resolution is 2,880×1,920 pixels, and the aspect ratio is 3:2. The bezel is 9mm thick and the brightness is up to 500nits.

As a processor, we chose two versions: Intel Core i5-1320U and Intel Core i7-1250U (Intel Core i7-1250U). The RAM capacity and storage capacity are 16 GB and 1 TB, respectively. Unlike the XPS 13 basic model, it comes with an XPS Stylus. The XPS stylus can be stored by attaching it to the magnet on the top of the product.

It can support wireless charging of other devices via NFC. It supports Wi-Fi 6E and also supports built-in 5G. You can choose between 8GB and 16GB of RAM, and the SSD is up to 1GB. It has a 1080p webcam on the front and a 4K webcam on the back.

In addition, Gorilla Glass 7 is applied to enhance durability. The exact shipping price has not been disclosed.

First impression left on the foreign press

CNN, the American broadcaster, explained the XPS 13 product specifications, and said that the overall battery life, processor, and display seem to have improved by a notch compared to last year’s products, but they cannot hide their disappointment when looking at the webcam specifications. Most modern laptops have a 1080p camera as their webcam, but the XPS 13 has a lower 720p camera.

The Verge, an American online IT media, also mentioned the disappointment of the webcam quality. However, he said that the most promising factor for XPS 13 is whether it is equipped with Intel’s latest processor and achieves better performance than competitors’ processors such as AMD and Apple.

Ars Technica, an American tech media outlet, said that the XPS 13 is very similar to Microsoft’s Surface Pro 8. In particular, as the most similar part, they pointed out the design that adopted a detachable keyboard and the commonality of choosing an Intel Core i7-1250U.

However, Microsoft noted that the Surface product could sell the tablet screen alone without a detachable keyboard, unlike the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1, thanks to the built-in kickstand on the back of the tablet. Next, they evaluated that Microsoft products are more suitable for professional work if they have a wireless Bluetooth keyboard, given that they have a kickstand.
