  • Donald Trump’s supporters have come to Washington to protest the election results.

  • The spokeswoman for the current president spoke of over a million people – observers against a maximum of 10,000.

  • Donald Trump waved to his supporters from his car.

  • On the fringes, there were arrests and riots.

Several thousand supporters of US President Donald Trump gathered in central Washington on Saturday to have his back. They shouted slogans like “Four more years” and “We want Trump”. The outgoing president, who still does not acknowledge his electoral defeat, waved to them from an armored vehicle on the way to the golf club. He had promised the day before that he could stop by the demonstrators and greet his fans.

The event was called “Million MAGA March”, based on Trump’s campaign motto “Make America Great Again”. Trump’s spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany spoke on Twitter of a million participants. “Madness! More than a million protesters for President Trump. The best political base in history. We love you!”

However, assessments by observers and the media ranged from a few thousand to just over 10,000. The Trump administration had already started its term of office by exaggerating the number of participants when it was inaugurated in January 2017. A week earlier, significantly more people were celebrating in the streets of Washington when Joe Bidens’ victory in the US presidential election was announced.

The Washington police arrested ten participants in the Trump demo by the afternoon, mostly for violating gun rules, as reported by TV broadcaster NBC. After the event, there were occasional confrontations between supporters and critics of the president in the city.

Motto “Stop the theft”

Speakers at the demonstration in Freedom Plaza, not far from the White House, followed Trump’s account that his victory was stolen from him by massive election fraud. They promised to keep fighting and abused the media for wrongly declaring Biden the election winner. “Fox News are enemies of the people!” One of the speakers shouted into the crowd. The channel from Rupert Murdoch’s media empire was Trump’s house broadcaster for a long time – but recently moved noticeably away from him. The President had repeatedly referred to the media as “enemies of the people”.

According to calculations by the US media, the Democrat Biden has clearly won the presidential election. It therefore comes to 306 votes from voters, 270 are necessary for victory. In his 2016 victory, Trump was also able to attract exactly 306 electorates to his side. In the US, the president is not elected directly, but by the electorate who follow the election results in their states.

Trump recently spread rumors, among other things, that software used in the vote count had converted votes cast for him in favor of Biden. The producer of the program, election officers and several US government agencies rejected this. “Stop the theft” was a motto for the Trump supporters’ march on Saturday.

Many participants without a mask

The longest speech at the demonstration was given by newly elected Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene. “The Democrats are no longer an American party,” she announced. One reason for this is because they wanted to take their guns away from Americans, Greene claimed. Now it is time to form “an army on the grassroots”.

Taylor Greene became known during the election campaign as a supporter of the QAnon conspiracy theory. The central claim of the QAnon supporters is that there is a conspiracy against US President Donald Trump in the deeper layers of the US government apparatus. They also often claim that prominent Democratic Party politicians in the United States have been treated with hormones obtained from the blood of children.

Many participants in the demonstration did not wear masks. Trump had always claimed in his election campaign that the US would soon be out of the woods in the pandemic. In addition, he often pointed out that he himself had quickly overcome his Covid 19 disease – even if he had been treated with an antibody drug that was still experimental.

The corona situation in the USA is meanwhile getting more and more out of control. On Friday there was the next record with 184,514 new infections, according to data from Johns Hopkins University (JHU). More than 1,400 people died.
