The return of holidaymakers clogs the southern Gotthard portal
The traffic jam between Faido and Airolo (TI) reached almost ten kilometers at midday.
Holiday traffic again caused traffic jams on both sides of the Gotthard tunnel on Sunday, as the day before. By 6 p.m. on Sunday, the line of cars heading north had shrunk to 4 km, the Touring Club Suisse (TCS) said. On the north side, the column between Amsteg and Göschenen in the canton of Uri measured up to 4 km.
The day before, holidaymakers traveling south as well as those on their way back had already had to be patient. The columns of cars extended for about ten kilometers on both sides of the Gotthard.
On Saturday evening, “technical problems” further resulted in a closure to traffic in both directions, the TCS tweeted shortly after 8 p.m.
To the traditional departures towards the south were added this weekend the first returns of holidaymakers. In the canton of Aargau, classes start again on Monday. In the most populous German state, North Rhine-Westphalia, school also resumes next week.
