Digital Books: The Publishing Industry’s Slow Shift To A Netflix-Like Model

It’s a small step closer to unlimited subscription access to the e-book market. In mid-November, Kobo launched a paid offer on French soil giving access to 57,000 electronic books for 10 euros per month (13 euros to add audio books). Called “Kobo Plus”, this e-reader manufacturer’s service joins a few similar offers (some also offer comics and press in their subscription) already present in France such as Youboox, YouScribe, Scribd or the Amazon Kindle e-reader.

The French digital publishing market, made up mainly of e-books and audio books, should weigh around 300 million euros in 2021, against 54 million in 2010. A nice increase which should not make us forget that the format represents just 10% of the global French publishing market, which should weigh more than 3 billion in 2021.
