For many, the black and white classic "Dinner for One" is part of a successful New Year's Eve evening. Butler James (played by Freddie Frinton), Miss Sophie (May Warden), lots of alcohol and the common tiger-skin pitfalls: Numerous TV viewers laugh about this combination every year. These include the long-dead friends of Miss Sophie, Mr. Winterbottom, Mr. Pommeroy, Admiral von Schneider and Sir Toby.
Here you can see "Dinner for One" on New Year's Eve 2019:
In the first, the Sketch Classic will run on December 31 at 3:40 pm and at night on January 1, 2020 at 1:30 pm and 5:10 pm. In the NDR "Dinner for One" will also be broadcast at 15.40 and again 17.10, 19.40 and 23.35. In the BR he runs 18:45 and 00:05 clock.
The sketch was recorded in May 1963 at the legendary Studio B at the NDR in Hamburg. During the recording, NDR telephone operator Sonja Göth laughed loudest. You literally hear them out in the audience. "The receptionist came to me at some point and put his finger on his lips," she said a few years ago the "Frankfurter Allgemeine". "That means: If I do not stop, I have to get out, even Freddie Frinton felt disturbed, so they told me that later." She is not proud of that. "I'm more embarrassed."
"Dinner for One" was first broadcast in 1972
First broadcast on New Year's Eve in 1972, the sketch at the turn of the year is like lead casting, sparkling wine and fireworks. But it is not only the Germans who are cultivating the tradition of seeing "Dinner for One" on the last day of the year. Also stations in Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Australia, Luxembourg, Belgium, Austria and Switzerland show the sketch on New Year's Eve. In the British homeland of Freddie Frinton and May Warden the short film was until recently barely known.
This changed last year. The cult skit was first shown on British New Year's Eve on New Year's Eve 2018, as the "Guardian" reported. The small themed channel Sky Arts showed the 18-minute sketch once on New Year's Eve.
