Diplomatic Discussions: National Leader Engages with EU Envoys

The focus was on topics related to the security situation in the neighborhood and the world, support to Ukraine, migration and energy policy of the European Union.

At the meeting, the Prime Minister emphasized that large-scale regional conflicts destabilize the international order, as well as cause new flows of mass migration. The European Union has repeatedly shown that it can act unitedly and efficiently – it must continue to do so: EU unity, political solidarity and the support of all member states for unified EU decisions increase trust and strengthen the role of the EU in the world. At the same time, it is important for both Lithuania and the EU to maintain a close dialogue with the USA and strengthen efforts to achieve sustainable peace.

The Prime Minister emphasized how important it is not to get tired and to support Ukraine until victory: to make every effort so that Ukraine gets all the requested and necessary weaponry as soon as possible, to be able to strengthen air defense, etc. The need to not forget Russia’s responsibility in relation to the war in Ukraine and to continue working in the areas of proper application of sanctions (within the EU and in third countries) and prevention of their circumvention was also emphasized.

Speaking about EU expansion, the Prime Minister noted merit-based (eng. merit-based) the process of integration of countries into the community, equal opportunities for all countries seeking this process, the importance of comprehensive implementation of reforms and the difficult situation of Ukraine, which is implementing recommendations and experiencing exceptional challenges. Ingrida Šimonytė expressed her hope that the recommendation of the European Commission regarding the negotiations between Ukraine and Moldova on EU membership will be positive.

The Prime Minister drew attention to the protection of the EU’s external borders, the effective fight against illegal human trafficking, and the strengthening of partnerships with third countries. She emphasized the need for a clear understanding of the threat posed by Russia and a confident response, including strengthening defense capabilities and defense investments.

When discussing the topic of energy, the prime minister mentioned that the security of Lithuania’s energy supply was ensured even before the start of the war in Ukraine, when the tension on the border of Lithuania started to grow: additional measures were implemented to ensure the uninterrupted supply of gas and electricity, and additional operational and technical infrastructure security measures were taken. Lithuania is closely monitoring the situation regarding October 8. of the detected leak of the Finnish-Estonian gas pipeline connection “Balticconnector”.

“However, we remain calm, Lithuania’s energy infrastructure is safe and we have plans ready for various scenarios,” said Ingrida Šimonytė.
