According to Dr. Chirag Desai, Dental and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai, bad breath can be categorized into two conditions: objective and systemic. Localized cases of bad breath are caused by poor oral hygiene, poorly fitted prostheses causing food to settle and periodontitis, which is inflammation of the gums.

Dr Desai said: “It is important to find out the cause and treat it, and the goal is to get rid of this problem. Other local causes of bad breath include tooth decay, gingivitis, abscess, common cold, maxillary sinusitis, and dry mouth.”

Dr Nitin Anand Krishnan, Dental Oncologist, Head and Neck Surgery Centre, Amrita Hospital, said bad breath is a symptom of poor health.

“It indicates that the patient does not visit the dentist on a regular basis. For example, the patient may not brush his teeth regularly, have several loose teeth, mobile teeth, or suffer from chronic ulcers,” said Dr. Krishnan.

However, if bad breath persists even after treatment, other causes such as kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, dry mouth, etc. should be assessed, Dr. Krishnan added.

And a person who complains of bad breath should first get himself checked by a general practitioner to understand the root cause, whether it is local or systemic.

Systemic causes include diabetic ketoacidosis, stomach disease, and Sjogren’s syndrome, an immune system disorder defined by two common symptoms: dry eyes and dry mouth.
