Disney+ censored ‘violent’ scenes from Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Certain sequences of the Falcon and the Winter Soldier series, deemed violent by Disney, have been censored. The company speaks of a “bug” related to parental control.

Series Falcon and the Winter Soldierbroadcast from March 2021 exclusively on Disney+, is no longer quite the same. In this tweet published on March 30 by The Direct, we can see that a scene from episode 3 was censored: while blood first appeared on the screen, it was deleted (at 35:27) .

In this video posted on YouTube, we notice that another sequence from episode 3 has been modified: Bucky uses a pipe to defend himself, and the pipe in question no longer digs into his opponent’s shoulder (at 37:45). Numerama has reviewed the portions in question and confirms these changes.

Disney would have decided to reduce a little the graphic violence seen in Falcon and the Winter Soldier. According to Polygonthese changes could be related to parental controls, revised due to the appearance of the Marvel series originally broadcast on Netflix (they are more violent than those of Disney+). On the SVOD platform, Falcon and the Winter Soldier is considered a program for ages 12 and up. Numerama contacted the company for more details.

According to sources close to The Direct, it would be a bug — but a bug capable of deleting elements and replacing them with others seems strange. According to a journalist of the Hollywood Reporter, citing “solid sources”, it would be a mistake: a file would have been put online rather than another. Disney is reportedly working on the issue to reinstate the previous, uncensored version.

This is not the first time that Disney+ has censored content: the platform, for example, did so when it was launched, to hide an actress’ buttocks in a cult movie.

Disney+’s funny censorship

This sudden censorship is not necessarily good news, in the sense that it could curb the creative freedom of the directors responsible for filling the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Especially since the films and series centered on Marvel superheroes are not known for their outrageous violence. On the contrary, the programs are designed to be as wide an audience as possible, in order to bring together as many people as possible in front of a screen. It’s the DC Comics stamped feature films that tend to be much darker.

We are therefore wondering about certain future projects, such as Blade, the blockbuster which will be centered on a half-man half-vampire character (where the blood should therefore flow freely). We hope that Disney+ will not go too far in watering down the tone, otherwise we could lose visual power (the first film Blade literally starts with a… shower of blood). If Disney wants to make the Marvel Cinematic Universe an empire of varied entertainment, then there’s bound to be works aimed at more mature audiences.

As a bonus, censorship can sometimes be ridiculous. In the pipe sequence Falcon and the Winter Soldier, credibility is questioned: given the force with which the pipe is thrown, it is supposed to sink into the shoulder. The audio has also not been modified: we hear the pipe enter the body of the victim, but we do not see it on the screen.

Disney+ has a section with more mature content: Star. Perhaps the platform should review the way films and series are stored to better educate viewers, rather than eliminating three drops of blood.
