Do you mind if I ask you how much you earn?

And you, how much do you earn? The question rarely arises in this way. We always add a “if it’s not indiscreet”, “well, if you don’t mind”, as if talking about money amounted to revealing an intimate part of our being, a shameful secret about ourselves, or was not only an accessory element of our existence.
But where does this embarrassment with money come from? How was it built? And especially how is it maintained, oddly, by those who have the least problems with it?
